While I slightly dreaded coming back to live in Charlotte for a bit, certain things have made it pretty nice. One of those, of course, is working for lululemon and getting to experience the culture of that company. Working with amazing people who love to get out and exercise has brought me to a whole new side of Charlotte. This wonderful group of healthy, loving, and consciously minded people has changed my mind about who lives in this city.
This undercurrent of healthy, happy people is evident at the gym MADabolic. Located on South Blvd. near the up and coming South End area, MADabolic offers a uniquely designed workout program. Founded by two ex-Charlotte Checkers players the gym has now grown to 8 locations.
Founder Brandon Cullen demonstrates one of the days movements.
The program is best described by their website:
At MADabolic Inc. we design every workout based on a one of a kind system created in-house. Each of these workouts are built around 5 unique movement categories, 3 specific interval designs and are then applied to our proprietary programmed template. All exclusive to MADabolic Inc. Every choice and every thought has a specific place in our program. MADabolic Inc. is the perfect blend of science and experience.
“Movement” categories include primal athleticism, power, strength and stability, rotational force (boxing), and anaerobic output.
The (usually) quick and dirty intervals keep you moving, working, and entertained. At the founding location in Charlotte Saturday classes fill up usually a week in advance, and members have only amazing things to say. You can find many of these members at other health and fitness centers around Charlotte. Yoga teachers, trainers, and others all supplement their routines with MADabolic.
The boxing may be my favorite part of the workout, who doesn’t love hitting a bag??
There are different groups for different abilities. Weights range in each group so you can feel comfortable with whatever level you are at. This aspect is one of the things that makes MADabolic feel so welcoming and non-threatening. Plus once you are able to move up a group you feel like a total badass.
Instructor Christina Gillespie demonstrates the lift of the day. Christina is also involved in 28 to life, a hands-on, realistic guide to finding nutritional freedom with real food. This educational consultation teaches people how to break out of the prison of diets, calorie counting and conflicting nutritional information all while finding the keys to easy weight loss and a healthier lifestyle. It was so much fun to be able to take pictures for them! I did the workout after and was dying on these ropes. Never before have I tried to develop arm and shoulder strength….
Having an anaerobic movement mixed in really gets your heart rate up and going, these bikes are no joke. Part of the workout was also to increase your speed each time. My secret for these? I chant “be like marshawn, marshawn wouldn’t quit!” (Marshawn Lynch helped me win my fantasy league, plus he’s the best)
Another great thing about MADabolic is that they switch up the movements so often you never know what to expect I had never done these Russian Plate Twist till the other day.
MADabolic has really been an awesome spot to be while I am back home, and its helped me to finally have some kind of form to my arms! (seriously this has never happened I’m so excited)
With high quality people, intervals, movements and program I cannot more highly recommend this gym if its near you. If you are interested in learning more their website is http://madabolic.com
Cheers to becoming super strong!
